The revision of the genus Pinnularia by KRAMMER(1992) contained European taxa only. This new monograph contains in addition many new as well as already known taxa from North America,Asia, New Zealand/Australia, and South Africa. Consequently the geographical area covered by this new revision is much broader than the title of this book would make believe.Research with modern methods and most recent knowledge usually show plenty of inconsistencies in traditional taxonomy and result in numerous new combinations and new descriptions. This proves to be true for 154 new species and varieties, 3 new genera and 42 new combinations in the present monograph.
