'Estonian Parks' is a reference work prepared in co-operation between the Ministry of the Environment and the National Heritage Board, It contains descriptions of Estonian protected parks based on systematically compiled data. They are presented by counties and both heritage and nature protected parks have been treated on a common basis. Volume 1 was introduced by a thorough article by historian Ants Heina, which provided an overview of the history of the formation of Estonian parks and helped to link the following individual descriptions both in time and space. Volume 1 dealt with the parks of Tallinn, Harju County, Hiiumaa, Ida-Virumaa, Jõgeva County and Järva County, Volume 2 contains all the other counties in alphabetical order. The history, design, current situation and flora of each park are treated separately. The descriptions are based on previously published written sources, archival materials, fieldwork done during the compilation and data on the flora of the Tallinn Botanical Garden, and are richly illustrated with historical and modern plans and photographs.
