Checklist of Papuasian Orchids. 2017. illus. 493 p. gr8vo. Paper bd.
This checklist is an attempt to record all the so far known orchids of a narrowly defined Papuasia (excluding most of Indonesian Maluku Province and the Solomon Archipelago). Thus the narrow Papuasian area includes the island of New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Louisiade Archipelago, Biak, Misool, Salawati, Waigeo (Rawak), Yapen (Japen, Jobie), and Aru Islands (the latter group are administered in Maluku Province, Indonesia but are positioned on the Australian tectonic plate). When a taxon is known from both Indonesia (Papua Prov.) and Papua New Guinea, the distribution is simply given as New Guinea. Vouchers have unfortunately not been given for a number of records listed in the literature, this is usually indicated in the notes for the relevant taxon. In all about 2869 species (incl. hybrids) are enumerated here, with about 2508 considered to be endemic. Therefore nearly 87.4% of the orchid flora of Papuasia is endemic. There are about 129 accepted genera, but only five of these are endemic, three have only one species, whilst the other two have four to five species. The five genera are Dryadorchis, Monanthochilus, Ophioglossella,Qpuaea, and Ridleyella.
