An introduction is given to New World Arecaceae. A general history ofpalm taxonomy in the region is followed by a discussion of morphologyand pollen morphology, anatomy, cytology, and chemsitry, the fossilrecord and biogeogrpahy, ecology and evolution, and uses, domestication,and conservation. A table is given which provides the estimated numberof species (approx. 800 total), and the most recent monograph of all 71genera of New World palms. The introduction is concluded with a key toall genera of New World palms. The main part of the work consists of ataxonomic revision of four genera of palms comprising the subtribeIriarteinae (Dictyocaryum, Iriartea, Iriartella and Socratea). Theirmorphology, pollen morphology, anatomy, cytology, fossil record,phylogeny, historical biogeography, reproductive biology, andinteractions, are reviewed.
