This account aims to fill the need for detailed taxonomic informationon the plants from the semi - arid parts of the Greater Cape FloristicRegion outside to core Cape area. The GCF region of southern Africahabours approx. 11423 native plant species and has one of the richesttemperate floras in the world. The newly named Extra Cape Subregion comprises the northern, semi - arid part of the region. Covering 98 900 km2 and incorporating 92% of the Succulent Karoo Biome, theExtra Cape Subregion has an estimated 3715 native vascular plantspecies - ferns, other spore - bearing vascular plants and floweringplants - of which 40% are endemic. Extraordinary are the dominanceof succulent plants and the rich representation of geophytes.
