Throughout the history of modern naturalist thought, plant life has been regarded as subordinate to other forms of life. Plants and, more broadly, ‘nature’ have been treated as resources to be exploited, a view that has profound implications for the current ecological crisis. The creation of new narratives is urgently needed and requires us to draw on cultural, technical, symbolic and cognitive frameworks other than those of the dominant model.
This is what this book invites us to do: as we progress through the chapters, rooted in the territories of Indigenous peoples and local communities in Brazil, we are confronted with a diversity of knowledge, inseparable from ways of life and worldviews born of a constant process of shared existence between humans and plants.
Featuring contributions from Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers across various disciplines, as well as activists and farmers engaged in agroecology, this book offers a wealth of perspectives and commitments aimed at renewing our connection to the plant world - whose voices we must urgently begin to heed.
It is aimed both at a wider audience interested in the diverse interconnections between societies and plants, and at researchers and students.
