The treatment is based on the examination of over 10,000 herbariumspecimens and on field work in the center of species diversity in thegroup. All spcies of the region are included in this treatment toassist with identification. The center of both richness and endemismof native species is in East Africa (with 33 endemic species, focusedon Kenya and Tanzania). Secondary centers of diversity occur in SouthAfrica (12 endemic species). Both a dichotomous key and a synopticcharacter list are presented to aid with identification of these highlyvariable species. Full descriptions and synonymies (includingdesignation of lecto - and neotypes), illustrations, distributionmaps, and discussion concerning similar and potentially related taxa areprovided for all accepted species.
