The primary purpose of this book is to provide for the identificationof the 400 reef and shore fishes that a SCUBA diver or snorkeler is mostapt to observe in the islands of the Republic of Maldives. A total of387 species of fishes are reported in the scientific literature from theMaldive Islands. As a result of four visits to the Maldives between 1975and 1988, the author and associates of the Ministry of Fisheries willreport 210 new records of fishes from the islands. Certainly more than100 remain to be discovered, so we can say that there are at least 700species of fishes in the Maldives.
