The aim of this book is to provide an in-depth account, from both a scientific and a popular science perspective, of the vast plant heritage comprising a wide variety of vegetation types and some 3,000 plant species, which make Liguria one of Italy’s regions richest in flora, boasting numerous habitats of particular interest due to the exceptional biodiversity they harbour.

The book begins with a brief introduction describing the distribution of wild flora and the various forms of vegetation, which result from the unusual proximity of the peaks of the Alps and the Apennines to the sea, the particular aspect of the slopes close to the coast, and the natural history of Liguria’s highest peaks. The main body of the volume describes the types of plant communities, highlighting their structure, regional distribution, specific biodiversity and main species, with particular emphasis on endemic, rare and protected plants.
