The third edition of this book has been completely updated and expanded. The 11 years between the previous edition and this third edition have been a period of intense activity in the worldwide systematics and taxonomy of algae, mainly due to the introduction of molecular biology techniques and scanning electron microscopy in the identification of genera and infrageneric categories of microalgae.

Molecular biology studies have greatly affected taxonomy, for example of the Chlorococcales and Euglenophyceae; and the Bacillariophyceae have been the constant target of scanning electron microscopy, which has split genera and redistributed species.

The total number of genres included in this third edition of these keys is 591. What appears to be a negligible increase in the total number of genera identified for the country, compared to the 584 known in 2006, was due to the aforementioned reformulation, which sometimes increased the total and sometimes decreased it due to systematic arrangements.

With no similar competing work in Latin America at the moment, this key is a demand from the Brazilian scientific community. It replaces the previous, second edition with great advantage. Genera of algae from continental waters: keys for identification and descriptions is, without a doubt, absolutely indispensable and a true 'vade mecum' for specialists in all national and Latin American institutions concerned with water quality or wastewater treatment, as well as for undergraduate and postgraduate students and decision-makers in the field of water.
