The primary reason for preparing this edition is to improve the quality of the manual. With this purpose in mind, several changes and additions have been made: 1. Fifty-two genera that are seldom seen and seem to have little economic importance have been omitted. 2. Keys have been reworked in order to make them more useable and to eliminate errors.3. A simplified key to selected common genera has been added, which may prove useful to the beginning student. 4. Scanning electron microscope photographs illustrating each method of conidial formation in the Hughes-Tubaki-Barron System are included. 5. The reference section has been expanded to include literature related to the physiological section and other recent publications on taxonomy. 6. Consistent with our objective to make this manual more useful as a teaching tool, we have added a short section on nutrition and sporulation of selected imperfects and have suggested a few exercises or demonstrations that illustrate biological principles.
