Vihreä Afrikka - kasveja ja kasvillisuutta (Green Africa - Plants and Vegetation). 2011. (Norrlinia, 23). illus.(col.) 320 p. gr8vo. Paper bd. - In Finnish.
The book introduces the most important vegetation types in tropical Africa - savannas, semi-deserts, rainforests, wetlands and mountain vegetation. An example is East Africa from Ethiopia to Mozambique, and from there to the west to the western parts of Zambia, but the perspective is extended to cover the entire African tropics. The most important trees and other plant species have been selected from each area and are presented with texts and pictures.
The relationship of animals to vegetation is briefly examined. The ecological importance of mushrooms in tropical forests and savannas is usually overlooked, but this aspect is also illustrated by many examples. Human livelihoods, activities, and impacts on wildlife are the theme at the end of the book - the crops, natural mushrooms, and other collectibles, as well as the pros and cons of forestry, will be introduced, not to mention African ornamental plants. Finally, we look at nature conservation in Africa and its sad prospects.
