As Charophyceae, vulgarmente chamadas de caráceas ou carofíceas, são ainda um grupo de algas pouco privilegiado pelos estudantes. A presente flora reúne 26 espécies de Chara e 39 de Nitella habitantes, dominantemente, de corpos d’água lênticos e semilênticos do Brasil.

A identificação do gênero dos representantes das caráceas é bastante fácil e pode ser feita no campo, no ato da coleta, usando uma lupa de 10 aumentos. A identificação das espécies, variedades e formas taxonômicas é, entretanto, mais exigente e requer o domínio de uma nomenclatura bastante própria e abundante. Tal nomenclatura deve-se, primeiro, à exuberância de características morfológicas e reprodutivas dessas algas e, segundo, à sua classificação no passado entre as briófitas, pteridófitas e até entre as monocotiledôneas das fanerógamas, cuja passagem em cada grupo permitiu-lhes incorporar nomes referentes à sua morfologi

Identifying the genus of charophyceae representatives is quite easy and can be done in the field, at the time of collection, using a 10x magnifying glass. However, identifying species, varieties, and taxonomic forms is more demanding and requires mastery of a rather specific and abundant nomenclature. This nomenclature is due, firstly, to the abundance of morphological and reproductive characteristics of these algae and, secondly, to their past classification among bryophytes, pteridophytes, and even among the monocotyledons of phanerogams, whose passage through each group allowed them to incorporate names referring to their morphology.
