In the course of the revision of Ascomycetes classified in Chaetomium (von Arx, Guarro & Figueras 1986), numerous other Chaetomiaceae,Thielaviaceae, Microascaceae, Melanosporaceae, Sordariaceae andLasiosphaeriaceae have been examined. In the present publication descriptions, light- and scanning electron micrographs are presented of Sordariaceous Ascomycetes, classified in the Chaetomiaceae,Microascaceae, Pithoascaceae and Thielaviaceae. Only those species of which sporulating cultures are present in the CBS Culture Collection in Baarn, The Netherlands, are fully described and illustrated. Keys are given to all accepted species, also to those of which no sporulating cultures are available. All families belonging to the new suborder Sordarinae of the Sphaeriales are delimited, but the Sordariaceae,Lasiosphaeriaceae, Coronophoraceae and Melanosporaceae are only discussed in the introduction. Fully delimited and described are Achaetomium, Subramaniula, Boothiella, Corynascella, Corynascus,Melanocarpus, Thielavia, Chaetomidium, Emilmuelleria, Lophotrichus,Petriella, Pseudallescheria, Canariomyces, Kernia, Microascus,Pithoascus, Pithoascina, Pidoplitchkoviella, Aporothielavia, Leuconeurospora and Faurelina.
