Die Horn- und Lebermoose Österreichs (Antho- cerotophyta und Marchantiophyta). 2017. (Catalogus Florae Austriae, Teil 2, Heft 2; Biosystematics and Ecology, 32). 140 kol. Fig. 382 S. gr8vo. Broschiert.

The present catalogue of hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) and liverworts (Marchantiophyta) is the first synopsis for these two plant kingdom phyla in Austria. In spite of their rather distant phylogenetic affinity, horn- and liverworts are treated here together in view of tradition and the few hornwort species involved. In the general part of this catalogue a historical survey and our present state of knowledge of horn- and liverworts in the federal states of the country is presented. A short ,,hepaticogeography" of Austria and geomorphologically very different landscapes. As in other volumes of the ,,Catalogus Florae Austriae" there are no keys and no descriptions of genera and species. Principally, nomenclature and systematics follow the new ,,World Checklist of Hornworts and Liverworts" (SODERSTROM et al. 2016). The only exceptions are necessary in a few critical groups (e. g., Lophozia and Scapania) and, furthermore, a new combination (Lophoziopsis latifolia) is provided. No taxonomic ranks above families are considered. The sequence of families is systematical, that of genera alphabetical. Particular attention is given to species distribution, using data obtained from the extensive literature and the collections in public herbaria. In addition, an enormous number of unpublished records were included and many specimens critically revised. Detailed information on ecology and phytosociology rest primarily upon observations in Austria. The general decline of species diversity also affects Austria and its horn- and liverworts. Thus, the growing threats to species and their habitats are evaluated. Optional notes concern taxonomy and other topics. About 140 colour photos illustrate the treatments of selected species of horn- and liverworts. Up to now 4 species of hornworts and 260 species of liverworts (+ 5 additional subspecies and several varieties) have been documented for Austria. For the individual federal states the following numbers of horn- and liverwort species have been found: Burgenland (2+ 82), Carinthia (3 +211), Lower Austria (2+ 166), Upper Austria (4 + 184), Salzburg (2 + 207), Styria (4 + 226), Tyrol (3 + 207), Vorarlberg (2 + 202) and Vienna (1 + 59). After considerable progress during the last years, the state of knowledge for horn- and liverworts within the country can be regarded as satisfactory.
