Orchids of Vietnam in Color and Graphics. 2025. 2565 figs.(partly col.). 589 p. gr8vo. Hardcover.
The book summarizes all the documented records of orchid species ever reported for Vietnam. It represents an annotated, illustrated alphabetical list of 188 genera and 1390 species. The annotation for each species includes the accepted species name with authors, the main synonyms, data on distribution in and outside Vietnam, species living form, parent rocks and elevation of habitat, frequency, and proposed IUCN conservation status in Vietnam. The reported plants (except for a few insufficiently known species) are illustrated by 2565 original color photos and/or ink drawings. The generic concept accepted in the book is based on the World Flora Online database (WFO) in cases when it does not meet strong dissonance with important morphological characters. Seven species (Bulbophyllum vuongii, Cheirostylis pseudopusilla, Chiloschista minutiflora, Papilionanthe vietnamensis, Platanthera alba, Thrixspermum bicornutum, Zeuxine chumuensis) are described here as new to science. One genus and 38 species are reported as new national records. The ten largest orchid genera in Vietnam are Bulbophyllum (with 182 species), Dendrobium (139), Liparis (62), Eria (54), Habenaria (42), Oberonia (41), Cymbidium (37), Cleisostoma (32), Paphiopedilum (32), and Coelogyne (31). There are 309 species endemic to Vietnam, which constitutes about 22% of the national orchid flora. The orchid genera endemic to Vietnam are Apetalanthe, Bidoupia, Christensonia, Cleisostomopsis, Deceptor, Lockia, Theana, Vietorchis, and Zeuxinella. The highest orchid diversity in Vietnam is documented in such provinces as Lam Dong (with 542 confirmed species), Dak Lak (405), Kon Tum (379), Ha Giang (297), Son La (261), Lao Cai (207), Gia Lai (208), Khanh Hoa (175), Cao Bang (168), and Dien Bien (168).
